An Ottawa centre that hopes to help small businesses grow and develop new products is getting $8 million from the federal government as it readies to open in the fall.

Federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains announced Wednesday the federal government will invest up to $8 million in the Innovation Centre at Bayview Yards.

The Innovation Centre at Bayview Yards in Ottawa announced an $8 million injection from FedDev Ontario for new programming and technology at the first entrepreneurship hub of its kind in Ottawa.

Everything is on track for the opening of the city’s Innovation Centre at Bayview Yards, said Saad Bashir, the city’s director of economic development and Innovation.

The city is expected to match the $15 million in provincial funds dedicated to the project, and is hoping to receive news of federal funding for the incubation hub soon. Start-up businesses that can't afford to lease space are expected to take advantage of the space.

Esther Anegbe is a new graduate from Carleton University’s Technology Innovation Management (TIM) program. She entered the program with an undergrad degree in Computer Engineering and a technical background in system and network administration, cloud solutions implementation, and support for small businesses. Esther is originally from Lagos, Nigeria and came across the TIM program while researching where to further her education in information technology.

After striking a deal with a major Canadian property manager, a fledgling Ottawa startup could soon have its digital directory technology installed at shopping centres across the country – and is already looking at expanding into foreign markets, too.
